featureTerrariums have really gained a lot of popularity lately. But purchasing one already planted is extremely expensive and takes the fun out of decorating with these beautiful little gems. Roll your sleeves up and try this DIY terrarium tutorial from Instructables instead – you won’t be disappointed!

Super Cute DIY Terrarium Tutorial

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Glass Globe
  • Sand or Pebbles
  • Activated Charcoal
  • Potting Soil
  • Moss
  • Small Sticks or Bark
  • Stones, Shells, Rocks or Other Decorative Add-ins
  • Small Plants
  • An Air Plant
  • A Succulent (it isn’t recommended to mix succulents and regular plants due to different watering requirements)
  • a nice hook or string to hang it by
  • spray bottle or mister (like this one)

If gathering up all of these items seems like a chore you can also purchase a complete DIY terrarium kit from several online stores. The kits are less expensive than buying one that has already been created. You can purchase the featured terrarium kit here.

  1. Add a thin layer (1/4 to 1/2 inch) of sand or pebbles in the bottom of the globe.
  2. Top this layer with a thin layer of activated charcoal.
  3. Now add in an inch or two of potting soil that is light and drains well.
  4. Add in the largest elements – the plants! If you are working with a container that has a side opening only you should plant back to front, with the tallest elements in the back of the globe.pic
  5. Next you add in the smaller elements, like twigs, stones, shells or special keepsakes.  pic
